Your Ads Are Not Working? Here's What You Might Be Doing Wrong

You've been running adverts on TikTok, Facebook or Instagram, spending money every day, but you're not getting the kind of customers or sales you expected.

Or maybe your adverts were performing well before, bringing you customers, and suddenly they stopped converting.

Listen, before you conclude that adverts don't work for your business, there are some things you need to understand.

Sometimes, the problem is not even how much you're spending on adverts. It could be how you're running them, the content you're using, or what happens after people click on your advert.

Let me explain some possible reasons.

1. Your Advertising Content Might Be the Problem

One mistake some business owners make is believing that once they have a good product, all they need to do is run an advert and customers will start buying.

But that's not how it always works.

Your advertising content is what people see before they even decide whether they're interested in what you're selling.

If your video doesn't catch their attention or explain why they should be interested in your product, they might simply scroll past it.

For example, let's assume you're selling skincare products.

Instead of recording a video that only shows your products and their prices, you could create a video that explains a specific problem your target customers are trying to solve and how your product is relevant to them.

Your advert should give people a reason to become interested in what you're selling.

This is why I always encourage business owners to pay attention to their advertising content.

2. You Might Be Targeting the Wrong People

Another possible reason your adverts aren't working is your audience.

Imagine you're selling products meant for business owners, but your adverts are reaching people who have no interest in running a business.

You might get views, likes and even comments, but those engagements may not translate into customers.

And this is something you need to understand:

Getting views on your advert is not the same thing as getting customers.

Before running your advert, understand who is most likely to be interested in what you're selling.

Consider their needs, interests, location and buying behaviour.

Also remember that advertising platforms use automated delivery systems, so the audience settings you choose are only one part of how your adverts reach people.

3. People Might Be Getting Tired of Seeing the Same Advert

There's something we call creative fatigue.

Let me explain.

Imagine you've been running the same advertising video for weeks.

Initially, the advert was performing well. People were clicking, making enquiries and buying your products.

But after some time, you notice that the advert is no longer bringing the same results.

One possible reason is that people have repeatedly come across the same advertising content and are no longer responding to it the way they did before.

This doesn't mean your product has suddenly become bad.

It could simply mean you need to introduce something different.

Instead of running one video continuously, try recording other videos promoting the same product from different angles.

You can change the opening statement, the example you use, the problem you focus on, or how you demonstrate your product.

If possible, prepare multiple advertising videos before starting your campaign so you can test which ones perform better.

However, don't assume every decline in performance is creative fatigue. Check your campaign results before making that conclusion.

4. Your Budget Might Not Be Enough to Evaluate the Advert

Sometimes business owners expect too much from an advert within a very short period.

For instance, someone might start running adverts today and expect to make several sales immediately.

When that doesn't happen, they conclude that the advert isn't working.

But you need to understand that advertising results can vary.

Some campaigns generate sales quickly, while others need more time and testing.

The important thing is to look at the actual results you're getting.

Are people clicking your advert?

Are they visiting your website?

Are they making enquiries?

Are they attempting to buy?

These things can help you understand what's happening.

Don't keep spending money blindly, but don't conclude that an advert has failed simply because it didn't generate a sale immediately.

5. Your Advert Might Be Working, but Your Website Is Losing Customers

This is another thing I want business owners to understand.

Sometimes the advertising platform is doing its job.

People are seeing your advert, clicking on it and visiting your website.

But they're not completing their purchases.

Now, is the problem necessarily the advert?

Not always.

The problem might be your website.

For example:

  • Your website takes too long to load.

  • People don't understand what you're selling.

  • Your product information is incomplete.

  • Your checkout process is confusing.

  • Customers experience problems while trying to pay.

  • Your website doesn't give customers enough confidence to complete their purchases.

These things can affect your sales even when your advert is attracting interested people.

So before increasing your advertising budget, make sure the website or landing page you're sending people to is working properly.

6. You Might Be Changing Your Adverts Too Frequently

Another mistake is constantly changing campaign settings without giving yourself enough information to judge what is working.

You launch an advert today.

Tomorrow, no sales.

You change the audience.

The next day, you change the budget.

After that, you change the creative.

Then you switch everything off and start again.

If you keep changing multiple things at once, how will you know what actually caused the improvement or decline?

This doesn't mean you should leave a clearly unprofitable advert running indefinitely.

It means you should make changes based on the information you're getting, rather than changing everything because of one bad day.

So What Should You Do When Your Ads Are Not Working?

Before spending more money, try to identify where the problem is coming from.

Ask yourself:

  1. Are people actually seeing and engaging with my advert?

  2. Is my advertising content convincing enough?

  3. Am I reaching people who are likely to need my product?

  4. Are people clicking through to my website or contacting me?

  5. Are people attempting to buy but failing to complete payment?

  6. Have I been using the same advertising video for too long?

  7. Am I giving my campaigns enough data before making decisions?

The answers will help you decide what to work on.

Sometimes you need new advertising content.

Sometimes you need to review your audience.

Sometimes you need to improve your website.

And sometimes you need to change the way you're measuring your results.

Final Thoughts

If your TikTok, Facebook or Instagram ads are not working, don't always assume the solution is to increase your budget.

Before spending more money, try to understand why your current adverts aren't giving you the results you want.

Because if the problem is your content, targeting or checkout process, increasing your advertising budget may simply mean spending more money without solving the actual problem.

And that's something you want to avoid.
